Women it is Time to Take a Stand:

The Bias Barrier

Enrollment isn’t the only issue adversely affected by discrimination. Mercy Tembon points out all efforts to date have been focused on enrollments – getting more girls into school – rather than performance. What girls are actually learning in school needs equal attention.

“Studies have shown teachers perceive girls to be less intelligent and thus treat boys and girls differently. Accordingly, male students receive more attention from the teachers, are given more time to talk in class and ultimately are given more praise than girls in the classroom,” Tembon says. “As a result, there’s no self-esteem for the girls because they’re meant to be subservient, to be quiet and sit at the back of the classroom.”

Breaking Down Barriers

“In addition, textbooks and other related school materials must eliminate existing gender stereotypes such as those that portray women cleaning and cooking while men are shown as professionals such as engineers and doctors,” Tembon emphasizes.

Real progress has been made in recent decades toward securing equal rights for women. But women and girls continue to face unfair practices and policies in many workplaces and schools. Women in minimum wage jobs, women of color, and immigrant women are often among the most affected by this discrimination, which comes in many forms. Women are denied equal rights when they are:

  • Paid less than men for the same or comparable work
  • Denied promotions and training opportunities
  • Shut out of high paying jobs and occupations
  • Subjected to sexual harassment
  • Penalized for taking time off to care for their families
  • ERA works to eliminate these forms of gender discrimination so all women can realize their full potential.

1."Between 40 to 90 % of women in the United States have been victims of some form of sexual harassment on the job."(Exacerbating).

2."Victims of sexual harassment lose $4.4 million dollars in wages and 973,000 hours in unpaid leave each year."(Exacerbating).

How to Change Discrimination:

Block

Change starts at Home:
Instead of giving girls toys such as "Barbie" and purses that only provide girls to follow social norms. Enhance critical thinking skills by giving younger generations toys such as "My First Brief Case" which can be seen at the link :

"My first Briefcase" provides children pretending they ready for work. Using their own cell phone that rings, calculator that squeaks and wearing a wrist watch that rattles. And owning their own key and car alarm that clicks."

 2. Change the Education System:
This change will not happen over night but parents need to take a stand to make sure their child is recieving equal treatment in the classroom. Be coming involved could give your child the extra boost to become confident to go after what they want as well.

3. Invest in buying a computer:
In the fast pace world of technology, the sooner a child adapts the better. Explore the differnt game and internet options with
a young one.

4. LANGUAGE  !!!!!!
In society ideas are not normally neutral to gender. Through writing and in verbal communication everyone needs to be conscious of what language is used.

Why are girls lacking skills and interest in math and science?

Impact of Socialization

Throughout their learning girls are encouraged to be passive, caring, to take no risks, and to defer to male voices in the public discussion. They are also given the message that math is for males. Such an orientation obviously has an impact on how they learn and behave in school.

Women are often penalized for attempting to participate in the "male domain." "Often the perception of behavior is confused with actual behavior, based on sex-role stereotypes" (Tembon). While a male might be called ambitious, assertive, and independent, a women displaying the same behaviors is often labeled aggressive, pushy, and argumentative."Studies continue to show that when women and men exhibit the same behavior, that behavior is devalued for women."(Tembon).

"If girls are clustered in lower level mathematics, their knowledge will be significantly less than males, particularly white males, who take advanced courses" (Tembon). The self-selecting out of mathematics in high school points to another message - one of sex role stereotyping - that mathematics is not for girls.

By the time they reach college, most young women have opted out of mathematics- and technology-related programs.

Furthermore, women continue at the university level only "26.5 percent of master's degrees and 8.4 percent of doctorates in computer and information services were earned by women. And, in the work force, only 27 percent of all computer programmers and analysts are women" (Tembon)

Sex Discrimination Act
Gavel Banging
of 1984

Know Your Rights:

These examples of sex discrimination are to help you decide if you are being discriminated against because of your sex.

Hiring

You apply for a job as an executive consultant.Although you have experience and excellent qualifications, you are not hired because some of the company’s long-time clients are more comfortable dealing with men.

Firing

You are told that you are laid off due to company cutbacks and reorganization. However, men in the same job and with less seniority keep their jobs.

Promotion

You work as a sales clerk at a retail store for ten years but have been repeatedly denied the opportunity to advance.Men with less experience, including men that you trained and/or supervised, receive the promotions instead.

Job Classification

You work at a company that has an eight-tier job classification system.Your responsibilities have increased over time, but your job classification and pay has remained stagnant. Male colleagues have their job classification and pay adjusted to reflect their increased responsibilities.

Ideas Why Men make more Money than Women:
  1. Men are the "head of the family"
  2. Higher Positions
  3. Society thinks men are more capable
  4. Affermitive Action: Men are wanted for jobs like Elementary School Teachers to give children role models
  5. Women leave for raising children

A waitress makes .87.1

The Pay Gap Continues Due To:

The Glass Ceiling-
Women face the glass ceiling meaning they reach a point of no further promotion

The Glass Escalator-
Men face the glass escalator helping them be promoted faster than women
